Some of you may be asking what is a B’nai Mitzvah?  The B’nai Mitzvah formally marks a “coming of age” when a child assumes the responsibilities of a Jewish adult to observe the mitzvot (Commandments)  handed down by g-d and Moses.  Among our obligations, we will now be counted as a member of the community for the purpose of a minyan (a quorum of 10 jewish people required for communal prayer), can wear a tallit (prayer shawl), and may lead services.  The highlight of the service will be when we read from the torah.  The torah comprises the first five books of the Hebrew bible and it is the foundation of jewish life.  We can’t wait to celebrate this special weekend with you!!

Our B’nail Mitzvah Project

http://donorbox.org/hulnick-b-nai-mitzvah

Please join us in supporting Chester Upland Youth Soccer in honor of our B'Nai Mitzvah. The organization provides after-school and weekend soccer programming, mentorship and nutrition education for children in the traditionally underserved, suburban Philadelphia communities of Chester, Upland and Eddystone. Using the U.S. Soccer Foundation's Soccer for Success curriculum, their trained, caring coach-mentors help children enjoy and embrace active, healthy lifestyles.

Chester Upland Youth Soccer engages not just children playing soccer, but also their families. Parents, guardians and coach-mentors connect at a variety of events such as the event we are organizing for our B’nai Mitzvah project, a Soccer Saturday Fun Day in Wallingford, PA.

The Hulnick Soccer Saturday will take place on Saturday, April 30. The day includes soccer drills and games that will be organized by us, with the help of our friends and the coaches and mentors from CUYS.

We are also collecting healthy snacks from January- May that can be dropped off at our house or in the lobby at Kesher Israel Congregation. Suggestions include: granola bars, Clif Bars, goldfish crackers, pretzels, popcorn, Pirate's Booty or baked chips (individually packaged servings, please.)

Sabbath Observance Guidelines

To keep the holiness of the day intact, Jewish law prohibits certain behaviors during the B’nai Mitzvah service.  Please help by honoring these requests:

  • Turn off cell phones, and please do not use them in the synagogue (They can be used on Saturday night at the party)
  • do not use photo, digital or video cameras
  • do not smoke in the synagogue or on the grounds
  • please wear a head covering (kippah) which will be provided as you enter the sanctuary.  Tradition requires that men cover their heads.  Women are encouraged to, but it is optional
  • proper dress is requested, please no jeans or sneakers.  Women and girls are asked to have their shoulders covered and dress modestly.  A sweater or shawl can be worn over a sleeveless dress while in services
  • please do not bring gifts into the synagogue during the morning service
